VOLVER IN PROGRESS

lyrics so far - first draft - unedited and not complete -

GHOSTS DON’T CRY
VOLVER

You thought that I was dead
But underneath the bed, I hide.
Laying flowers on my grave
The east wind blows the years away
So unkind

Im so sorry that I lied,
I had no choice, I had to hide
And leave the ashes far behind me.
The other lovers I forgave
I always looked another way
And didn’t see the sin before me

Behind these shuttered windows
Ev’ry day I live In purgatory/endless guilt
For being blind to such a crime,
Till you embrace me,
Ev’ry day I’ll die

But now I hope you’ll understand
The bloody knife still in your hand
Your husband in the freezer
The devil burning in his bed
He didn’t wake till he was dead
After all he could to please her

VOICE OVER IN SPANISH –

“I NEED YOU MUM
I DON’T KNOW HOW IVE LIVED ALL THESE YEARS WITHOUT YOU

DON’T SAY THAT
I’LL START TO CRY
AND GHOSTS DON’T CRY”

I could feel how you despised
I saw the hatred in your eyes
But  Couldn’t hear the silence
I understand you had to leave
And take the secret far from me,
Your sister child inside you.

Behind this door I’ll be
With you across the street from me,
We’ll hide.
Ev’ry kiss, a minute made
From fourteen years of empty space inside.

So the sinners turn to dust,
The victims of a deadly lust
?
?

  1. At the library with a slow connection so can't watch the video yet but I have to say I love it how you're sharing the different stages and parts of work in progress and not just the songs when they are ready. It really gives an in-depth into the songwriting process.

I'm impressed about the way you've transferred the story from between two mediums here and that you decided to approach it from the mother's perspective, her words to Raimunda, excepting for the Spanish dialogue between the two - I guess that's directly from the film? I don't speak Spanish and watch with Finnish subtitles.

Regarding the line "Ev’ry day I live In purgatory/endless guilt": English isn't my native language, but my feeling is that of the two alternatives you have here, 'purgatory' has more of a Catholic religious tone, whereas 'endless guilt' doesn't. Of course, Spain is a Catholic country, and I hear Catholicism is so much in the culture that it may well be naturally in the language people use irrespectively of whether the person is religious or not. I never thought whether the characters in the film are religious or not, actually. Hm...

  2. Right, and obviously I got my answer regarding the Spanish dialogue from the video.

And, adding about Catholicism: sin, sinners, devil and deadly lust are also mentioned in the lyrics, so I guess your take may be that the mother is indeed religious - or having been brought up in a Catholic culture, such words come naturally to her.

But then, I can't even begin to imagine how a mother feels when something like this has happened to her daughter. See did not see or admit it, and may well feel that she deserves the purgatory, the cleansing with pain and fire before she can be salvaged.

Sorry about going on about this...

  3. Gosh, my comment was poofed!

I really like that there will be Spanish sung and that although this is an initial draft of lyrics, the broader plans for the piece are here in context. Also, the tone of the guitar (the notes I do not know!) sounds Spanish. I definitely promote nixing any intonations of voice, such as 'so'; as when I remove the first one, I do love how strong and immediate the lyrics now read.

    must get back to work!

    thank you!
